The Best Electrolyte Drink

The dog days of summer are here and every day this week it is supposed to be close to 100°! There’s no way we are doing anything outside without being hydrated for fear of heat exhaustion. That’s why I wanted to share this simple electrolyte drink with y’all. I have all ideas you will need it in your part of the world too. We have been making it for a while and never buy any of those popular electrolyte drinks at the grocery store. (Most of them contain multiple processed sugars and artificial colors, that have been linked to all kinds of health issues.) As long as you have a large stainless steel or glass water bottle, you can make a homemade version.

When To Use An Electrolyte Drink

We drink this electrolyte drink when we are playing outside, working in the yard or playing outdoor sports. Any time you sweat is a good time to try this electrolyte drink. When you sweat your body looses water and minerals. When these are lost, especially rapidly, they need to be replaced. Our bodies need more than plain water and drinking an electrolyte drink can help you to stay hydrated while helping you to maintain your energy levels. Even in the cooler months it is important to replenish electrolytes during exercise.

What Are Electrolytes

Electrolytes are minerals that the body uses for different functions. Some electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. The body uses these electrolytes for proper muscle function, hydration, blood pressure and acidity balance. Our cells need electrolytes to work and function properly and they are essential for our bodies to survive.

The Best Electrolyte Drink Ingredients

This electrolyte drink is so simple to create and uses common items. The ingredients are simple to swap with others, for example, lemons for limes or orange juice for grape fruit juice. The ingredients you will need for the electrolyte drink are below. I don’t typically follow a recipe any more when I make this drink. I typically just use equal parts orange juice and coconut water, a spoonful of honey, lemon juice, a large pinch or two of salt and then I add water to fill up my water bottle. My preferred brand of orange juice is Uncle Matt’s and my preferred brand of salt is Redmond’s Real salt. Both of these brands are clean and Redmond’s Real salt contains over 60 trace minerals.

  • Organic Pulp Free Orange Juice

  • Organic Coconut Water

  • Juice From Half an Organic Lemon

  • Raw Honey

  • High Quality Sea Salt

  • Filtered Water

Why Make Your Own Electrolyte Drink

This drink is so simple to make, it takes no effort at all. If you are on a clean eating journey, you have probably realized by now that it’s better to make most of your own food. It is hard to find pre-packaged or “convenience” items at the store that offer clean, simple ingredients. Don’t be afraid to make your own electrolyte drink or any other food. Cooking and creating at home really is so much better for you. If you were to buy one of the popular electrolyte drinks at the grocery store the ingredients would include highly processed sugars, synthetic minerals and fillers and artificial food colorings. Processed sugars are void of nutrients, synthetic minerals are not easily absorbed by the body and artificial colorings have been linked to cancer and behavioral disorders. These ingredients do not make a healthy body.
