Strawberries and Cream Oatmeal

If you are nostalgic for those little packets of strawberries and cream oatmeal (especially if you’re a 90s baby) you will love this recipe. It tastes just like the original but includes way better ingredients. Sprouted oats, fresh ripe strawberries, cream and milk, vanilla, and sweet maple syrup all come together for a satisfying, nutrient-dense breakfast.

Proper oatmeal preparation and why it’s important

This recipe calls for organic sprouted oats or you could use organic soaked rolled oats. Using sprouted oats or soaking the oats overnight is important to help with digestion and for breaking down some of the phytic acid. Phytic acid found in oats can impair vitamin and mineral absorption, meaning your body won’t be able to use the nutrients in the oats. Phytic acid can also impair enzyme production making it difficult to digest the oats. Cooking is also important for oats because it helps to release some of the nutrients. (I used to love overnight oats until I learned that raw oats are difficult to digest and contain ingredients that block vitamin and mineral absorption.) So, in short, sprouting or soaking the oats can improve the bioavailability of the oats, increasing your nutrient intake along with aiding in digestion processes. Sprouted oats are higher in some vitamins and minerals than regular oats and can be found in most grocery stores.

Choose organic oats

It is also important to choose organic oats instead of conventional. Conventional oats are sprayed very heavily with glyphosate. Lots of times oats are sprayed more than once to kill insects and to dry them out. Glyphosate consumption has likely been linked to cancer, infertility and endocrine disorders. Since glyphosate is widely used it is found every where, not just on oats. If you’d like to dive deeper and learn more about glyphosate and why it is harmful, take a look at this article by The Food Babe.

How to soak oats

If you aren’t able to find sprouted oats you can purchase organic rolled oats and soak them over night. Place the oats in a large glass bowl and cover with filtered water, making sure there is more water than oats. Squeeze a small amount of lemon juice or pour a cap full of apple cider vinegar into the oats, cover and allow to soak over night. In the morning drain and rinse the oats, then cook as normal.
