Honey Caramel Sauce

Eating a nourishing diet isn’t about eating raw vegetables all day long. It’s more about eating whole foods that you enjoy and that bring nourishment to your body. Caramel sauce, made with local, clean ingredients can actually be a nourishing food. Pair it with apples or any other fibrous fruit to help balance your blood sugar and you have a delicious snack.

Honey

Pure, raw honey often contains many vitamins and minerals and is known for its antioxidant properties. The antioxidants found in honey can differ based on the nectar and pollen collected by the honey bee. One main class of antioxidants found in most honey are called flavonoids. Flavonoids have been shown to fight inflammation by helping to block the molecules that start it in the first place. Inflammation from a wound or injury is good but chronic inflammation can be the cause of many common diseases.

Butter

Butter has a bad reputation, but nothing could be farther from the truth. I know! Crazy, right, but stick with me here. When sourcing a high quality butter made from organic, grass-fed milk, it really is a health food. It contains vitamins A, D and K along with cholesterol and saturated fat, among other nutrients. I know it’s common to think that cholesterol and saturated fats are bad for you, that’s what our mainstream food system teaches, but it actually isn’t true. Our bodies need cholesterol for proper brain function and health, it is present in cells and it is the precursor to sex hormones, meaning we need it to produce them. The same goes for saturated fat, it is apart of our cells and helps to stabilize and keep them working properly. Saturated fat is much more stable than liquid fats, think “vegetable” oils, so it isn’t prone to oxidative stress making it good for cooking and baking. Just make sure you are sourcing high quality ingredients.
